Why Crash Diets Don’t Work

We’ve all been there.

You scroll through Instagram and suddenly see someone drop 10 kg in 2 weeks. You Google it. It’s a detox. A no-carb cleanse. A juice-only diet. Whatever it is — it promises fast results, and honestly, it’s tempting. But here’s the thing that many of us (myself included) have learned the hard way:

⚡ What is a Crash Diet, Anyway?
A crash diet is any extremely low-calorie, overly restrictive eating plan that promises rapid weight loss — usually in a matter of days or weeks.

Think:

500–800 calories a day
Cutting out entire food groups (no carbs, no fat, no solids)
Only juices, shakes, or soup
“Lose 10 kg in 10 days” kind of plans
Sounds extreme? That’s because it is.

❌ 5 Reasons Crash Diets Just Don’t Work

  1. You Lose Muscle, Not Just Fat
When you suddenly stop eating enough, your body doesn’t just burn fat — it starts breaking down muscle for energy. Less muscle = lower metabolism. And that makes long-term weight loss even harder.
  2. Your Metabolism Slows Down
Your body is smart. When it thinks you’re starving, it hits the brakes — slowing your metabolism to conserve energy. So the next time you eat “normally,” your body stores it fast… often as fat..
  3. They’re Not Sustainable – You can avoid carbs for a week. Maybe. But forever? Not likely.
  4. Most crash diets are so restrictive that the second you stop, the weight comes back — often with a little extra.
